converting .gp3 to .avi? newbie problem with audio

hello!

I found your software after searching the web for something that can handle .3gp files created on a nokia phone and I think it's great - the only problem I have is that when I export something strange happens to the sound (it goes all high-pitched?) no problems with the picture at all. I tried all formats with different settings and got the same result, but I know I could be doing something wrong so I'm asking the experts!

I'm using XP SP2 if that makes any difference

If anyone knows the answer to this I'd be grateful :o)

yes, you'd likely have the this experience with any mpeg-esque file format, since the audio in the inputfile is "streamed". we're having similar issues with our new zs4 video compositing product. as a result we will release a transcoder package real soon now which can convert mpeg-esque streaming formats to "uncompressed/raw" avi. this uncompressed avi will then include a PCM sound stream which zweisteins worlwide :) should be able to handle. just give us 12 to 24 hours... cheers, count inn

for 3gp to avi use this new utility which we've just posted: here's the link: t@b sox/mencoder front end

please give it a shot...

hi im a self confessed newbie and im very sorry but could you go through step by step how i am supposed to use your update to get my audio in sync with my videos from my mobile phone once i have converted it, and please im not the most skilled of people with computers so could you go through it methodically using simple non technical language, it would be appreiciated so much , thank you for your time

using t@b encoder with 3gp s

using t@b encoder with 3gp stuff

this assumes that you have downloaded and installed and launched the t@b media encoder already
  1. use the browse button on top right to open you *.3gp file
  2. press the play button at the very top right corner of the window.
  3. if you can see the video but not hear any sound, then you also will not be able to convert the sound. at this point give up on using t@b encoder for sound conversion
  4. Select the Output Type: Uncompressed AVI for ZS4 (this will also work for zweistein 3.01).
  5. Press the "Encode" button at the bottom left.
  6. Wait until the yellow color dissapears from the progress bar at the bottom...

Hi!

Just tried to follow these instructions after getting exactly the same problem as Griff using Zwei Stein.

However, using the preview feature in the t@b encoder I see the video, but get no sound. Any idea why this is?

The .3gp came from a Sony Ericsson K750i phone. It plays back OK (with audio) in Real player, but in other programs (such as Quicktime) the audio stutters. So they are having problems with it too :-)

Thanks, tj

I can supply a sample .3gp file if it helps!

I can confirm the behaviour. no sample file is necessary. I believe that the audio codec is missing or missbeheaving. I'll have to get back to you to see whether this can be fixed on my side or if the problem is in the mplayer/mencoder modules.

Complete newbie and first time user of the Zwei-Stein convertor software here....
I am unable to progress past the request stage to import a file where I specify the name of my .3gp file. I do not get the chance to specify the Export details. I think I have downloded the codecs required. Some advice would be most welcome. Thank you.

I downloaded Zwie-Stein and would like to know how come now all my filmic projects are considered crap. Even my best friends agree that I would be better off joining the fascist security guys at our local IT college rather than pursuing my artistic career. Perhaps I should be saving them as .3gp files and ensuring my codecs are up to date? What do you think Zwie-Steiners? Would I be better off writing my own editing program? Do you think I should marry Wendy? Seriously though Zwie-Stein users out there-if any one of you are capable of writing your own program - could I please borrow your brain after you've finished with it?

for Tony Pickering, two things come to mind

1. you may have the wrong program. Zwei-Stein is a Video Compositing/Editing program and not a converter. Download the t@b audio/video converter here.

2. If you're using the t@b media converter and you're having problems. I will look into them. Please not that the backend (the nuts and bolts) of the software was written by the people at mplayer and sox, who have put way more work into this software (converter) than t@b did. Problems may take a bit longer to solve if you have problems with the converter software.

Thank you for your reply. My task is to convert some 3GP video files to something I can view on my Windows XP PC...... My attempt at downloading the file from your link "t@b audio/video converter here" above resulted in a small 80kb exe which failed "The setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program" As you can see I am a novice and need your help badly.

I just changed the server that the downloads are coming from so hopefully you'll be able to download the full file now. Please let me know if it fails again.

Hi countinn,

Did you get a chance to find out if the problem .gp3 conversion is an issue with the t@b convertor or the mplayer/mencoder modules?

Thanks, tj

currently it appears to me that it is an issue with a missing ac3 codec in the conversion using mencoder/mplayer. To be precise, it seems likely that we're missing the decoding end (mplayer side) of things. This is a "guess" at this point. mplayer does have a "codec" or "drivers" subdirectoy which we possibly can include in our distro... maybe in part...

given this one can likely download mplayer/mencoder from http://www.mplayerhq.hu/ and get the full complement of codecs and get the job done before I do :)

Hi countinn,

I did a bit of research about the .3gp audio codecs for mplayer, and found a post indicating that the code exists to make it work, but there are legal issues preventing its distribution in binary form:

http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.video.mplayer.user/38924

Presumably, to get this working, I'd need to download the source code for the 3gp audio codecs, compile mplayer with that, and then re-compile t@b convertor against the mplayer libraries. Does this sound right?

It's been a long time since I compiled any code, and I don't have Linux, only Windows but I have Cygwin. Maybe this is beyond me.

Any ideas on what I can do?

hey, super newbie here, i am tryin to convert a video i dl'ed off google (its .gvi file) and i'm tryin to convert it to avi, how do you use the t@b converter to do this? does the video have to play in it's entirety in the mplayer? the reason i ask is in the "output type" box it says "n/a", can you guide me step by step in doing this (or do you have a page somewhere that has this info)?

Hi ALl,

Hello there - this is my first post as a new member. I cannot wait to try the recipies (Hmmm). Getting onto converting ... I am having the same probs as everyone above. Can convert the picture, but get the high pitched voice audio. I have a Nokia 6280 and want to convert the files into a common file to be viewed anywhere. I have uploaded some of the vids onto dropshots for rels in Germany to look at but there is no sound. Have a look if you like .. www.dropshots.com/Tandric. How can I use your program to convert and what setting should I use. I know you are probably rolling your eyes - yes - I know nothing about these things! But I do have some great recipies to add to your list! Please indulge me .... Kind regards - Luvlimum
